Eric,

Yeah, the Hobbit... don't know much about that, but I do know that
BeOS is optimized for multiple CPUs (up to 8) and runs pretty darn
well on PowerPC. One of these days I will pick up a used BeBox.
Those things were pretty cool... I have a copy of R4.5 and R4 (also
Preview Release 1 from MacWorld Boston '97) (as well as a pair of
those great "Beat The Machine" PowerComputing T-shirts from the same
show!) which run just fine on the stock PTP 200.

As for BeOS running on the 7100, don't bother. BeOS requires a PCI
bus and a 603 or higher. The 7100 has neither. The 7200, otoh, has
PCI, but still has a 601. BeOS won't run there either, unfortunately.

The 7200 should have both AAUI and RJ45 jacks, yes. But I don't think
you can use them independently - they are on the same controller (but
someone else here should be able to confirm that)

Peace,
Drew

Well, Be was initially written for a host of - what were they called -
Hobbit processors (same as in the Newton? but with more of 'em.) And
IIRC you can turn individual processors on or off. Early versions, at
least, would even let you turn off the final processor - of course,
your system would hang then. <g>

I don't know right off hand, but on an Intel (AMD) 380 mhz box, BeOS 5
runs pretty nicely. I just picked up a 7100 and a 7200 - the 7100 has
no HD, so I'm picking one up, and picking up a used copy of BeOS 4.5
(last PPC version) to stick on there.

It'll be fun to compare. <g>

Oh, and to double check something - 7200 - has both the AAUI and 10bT
ports on it? Or am I misreading the specs? (It should show up here
Tues.)
