Here is a follow-up to my Type-on-call predicament:

Another lister, who was a Type-on-call customer, wrote and
told me that the Adobe rep. he spoke with says that the
access codes are time sensitive. He was fortunate to have
called them before they discontinued support of the
product.

Now, for Type-on call customers, there is no way to
retrieve your fonts again if your backup becomes damaged.
Adobe has washed their hands of the support for this
product. People who own a legal license to the fonts, like
me, are left out in the cold.

I could go on a long rant about the state of the software
industry and its quest for profits at the expense of
customers. I won't go into that here. There are enough
articles that point out numerous examples of companies who
have treated the loyal customers as the enemy and had to
deal with the financial woes that come of it.

(I suppose that this came at a good time though. At the
print shop where I work, we are currently in the midst of
deciding on which product to migrate our design and
creation software. We have been using Pagemaker for years,
but that package is getting to old and creaky. We have a
total of four machines for which we would need to purchase
licenses for, plus I usually follow my work in the design
software I use at home. We were very much leaning toward
Indesign 2.0, but if this is the current state of Adobe's
customer service, we will have to seriously reconsider our
options.)

My solution to font problem was to purchase an old copy of
Illustrator 6 Deluxe CD. It includes the same 220 fonts
that I already have a license for. This now gives me a
total of three different licenses for the same font set:
(1) Type-On-Call Macintosh 220 fonts; (1) Type-On-Call
Windows/PC 220 fonts; (1) Adobe Illustrator 6 220 fonts.

I have found someone who has the Windows fonts from
Illustrator so that I can also replace my Windows set. I am
still short 4 font sets for my Macintosh license and 2 font
sets for my Windows license.

I think that it is obvious to anyone that I have no need
for two licenses for sets of the same fonts for my Mac. In
addition, I have sold my PC and my wife will have no need
for high-quality postscript fonts on here Windows laptop.

While I need the Adobe fonts for past projects, I will be
looking to another font house, such as Bitstream, URW or an
independent, to fill my needs.

I will now sell my two unused licenses. I wouldn't have an
extra license for Mac if I didn't have to go through the
customer service issues with Adobe. Further, I wouldn't
have even thought about selling my Windows license. Soon
there will be two happy people with a set of high quality
Adobe postscript fonts at a deep discount. Adobe will have
lost to potential customers and they probably have lost a
long-time customer as well.

Thanks for listening.

Take care,
