Kyle, Thanks, well there you go, ROM on the bottom of the board... Pulled the processor, pressed the button for 5 secs. There's a CMOS battery installed. Removed the memory I'd been given, it's labelled 128Mb 168pin 100MHz SDRAM. I don't believe this is compatible? Last I'd read the 8500 requires 5v DIMM, but there's no easy way (for me) to tell whether this is 3.3 or 5v. On reboot the speaker is silent. Reassemble with another old 168 pin 32Mb DIMM I have lying around, Reboot, the speaker makes a short "sshhh" noise, no video, short scsi disk murmur then silence. Would I get any kind of video if the memory was wrong or absent? I don't get anything.
