If you align the keys you can indeed force an SDRAM stick into an FPM/EDO 
DIMM socket, but you will most likely over stress or even break the FPM/EDO 
DIMM socket or the DIMM ejector latches.

I would begin testing the subject 8500 without any DIMMs at all. You should 
hear the "breaking glass" greeting at power-on, which indicates that the DRAM 
controller is (still) working, but that it found no DRAM present.

If you don't get this greeting, your DRAM controller chip may be fried.
