My advice would be don't change anything else for awhile, use it a lot and see if you get any funny problems that can be fixed by removing RAM. If not, you're okay. > >2. Will the performance of any of >these be markedly improved by allocating more than the default to either the >"minimum" or "preferred" memory settings? Yes. Take advantage of all that RAM! I'm currently giving Netscape 42 MB preferred memory (just as an example) and it speeds it up dramatically. Graphics programs (like Graphic Converter and Photoshop) do well with as much memory as you can give them. Depends on what kind of files you work on, too. I do mostly small photo scans and have Photoshop set to 50 MB. I suppose the same is true of Word, but I don't use the darn thing so can't say for sure.
> >3. Should I have virtual memory on or off? Mine is off. People on this list have said that once you are over about 96 MB of RAM you don't gain anything from using VM. Virtual memory, as I understand it, was designed to get around the problem of very expensive RAM, which is no longer an issue for the most part. > >4. Should I use a RAM disk, and if so, how? I don't use one. Maybe for browser cache? I have a pretty fast hard drive, so I have my browser cache on a partition of the drive. This works great, but I can't say if that would be the best thing for you. If you have a fast internet connection you could try setting your browser cache to 0.
