I took me a while to get everything numbered and terminated correctly, and I had plenty of bad experiences before I got it all sorted out (full SCSI string with an external SCSI burner on my 8500 G3 Frankenmac). Since then, nothing but consistent 4x burns with my 4x rated drive. Hang in there.
