Yes but they may not be the preferences you desire and you may have to re input settings (internet related) or get those high scores again (game related) or reinstall applications or registration numbers (some application related). Also some applications store libraries or files in preferences - Iomega Findit and Canopener are examples. Best I think to put suspects on the Desktop and check the mew one works ok before trashing it as then one can revert.
