They do rebuild themselves, but for example if you still use Word
5.1a, if you trash Word Settings which is kept in the Preferences
flder, your address book will be empty. A new TCP/IP preference file
will not have all your TCP/IP configurations.

Kenta's process is a very good one though.  And if a problem happens
to be an application preference, you can systematically replace the
preferences individually or in small groups from the folder you moved
to the desktop.
