I understand what you're saying about starting small and seeing what happens, but the problem is that you can't tell a drive to STOP sharing its folders until File Sharing is on. Until then, you just keep getting a dialog box telling you can't change file sharing until file sharing is on, and it asks if you want to open the control panel.
The folder "thing" I'm talking about is the item that blinks on top of the file sharing icon while it is starting. Looks like a little pipe with a knob at the end - guess it's some kind of network symbol. Once file sharing is on, that items stays there, but while it's starting up, that little item blinks on and off. I've got an 8600/G4 with 2 SCSI drives. Both are pretty big and I'm sharing the entire drive on each, but it can go for hours and still show file sharing as "starting up". It never shows "file sharing on", even if I keep it on full-time.
