I forgot about that "Catch-22" with the sharing.
Try this instead:
Open the file sharing control panel while your 8600 is
struggling, and click on the cancel button.
Then quit the control panel.
Now open your System folder and open the folder
named "Servers".  Trash any icons in there and
empty the trash.  Your computer may be trying to
locate some bogus servers that are no longer connected
to your network.  That can take forever.
Then try again to start the file sharing from the
control panel.
