If I didn't know you where using a mac, I'd think you had a W32 virus.
The file that NS stores the inbox info under has corrupted itself at a 
guess.

You might try copying all the messages you wish to keep into a new 
folder in "local folders".
Shutdown NS and make your way to your system preferences folder / 
netscape users / your profile name / mail /  Here you should find two 
files for every folder contained in your local mail, trash the two inbox 
files.

Restart NS mail and check that the inbox still shows and its server 
prefs, get mail, after highlighting a message the mail read-unread count 
should now be correct.
You might like to try filters to direct the various list traffic into 
separate folders, making following threads a little easier and taking 
some of the work of the inbox file.
