last night at thanksgiving my brother in law laid his old performa 6360
PPC on me as a 'would you like to get this out of my house since I'm not
using it?" gift. He gave me the apple 21" monitor to go with it, his zip
drive, the extended keyboard, and said he had a 56k modem in it.

in querying him about its specs I realized he seems to know less about
macs than I do from being at LEM for the last year. his answers sounded
vague and 'off', so I took them with a concealed grain of salt and
promtply came home and got on LEM and started data mining for the real
answers he didnt know.

example [with which i need you guys' help]--
while we were still in his office, I put the console on the floor and
started fiddling trying to get the cover off. this baffled him. he asked
why i wanted to open it. he said that was something he never once did in
the life of the camputer.
I answered like a child "because I wanna see what it's got inside".
right there I knew he and I approach our beasts completely differently.
He's the type who would never open the cover, would only let a paid
tchnician touch it, he's a user/consumer- only.

I, on the other hand, have come into the mac realm by way of curb finds
and dumpster rescues, and have been opening and getting familiar with my
macs from the beginning, last year,
...and I joined LEM--

so-- here I am to join a new group of enthusiasts and home hotrodders,
to learn the care and feeding of my new addition to my mac menagerie.

my 5 other macs are on the vintage list.
[2 IIfx's, a IIsi and an LCIII].
Therefore This marks my true entry into the world of mac PPC's and PCI's
{we had a bashed up powerbook Duo 2300c for a while, so i was subscribed
to the PB2300 list-- but it never woke up, so i can't honestly say i
ever got to do anything on it. I sold it for parts to another LEMming
and left that list]

so- first Q is how to open the creature to see inside?

other Q's I have already:

the G3/L2 cache sounds dynamite. anyone wanna tell me about using a
sonnet crescendo or a newertech cache card at the 300 or 400 range and
what you've found it to be like?

what is this geoport modem disabling I've read about, with the G3/L2
added? who what when where why, etc? is there way way found yet to get
around that?
internal modems? external modems? networking, routing, IP net masking?

what makes geoports different from the earlier generation of serial
ports?

i just got an apple color stylewriter 2400 on eBay, complete in the
box. anything I need to know ? will it work with this model? does it
need anything i shoudl know about?

my B-i_L said it ' has a card in it". an ATI rage, he said. he didnt
know anything more than that. [sigh--see what i mean?] so tales, URL's
and observations from you will be appreciated.

when asked, he thought it had 256 RAM in it. I think he had RAM and L2
cache confused. I think he meant it has a 256k L2 cache in it already.

I haven't yet set it up and turned it on and gone snooping.
for me, this will be a whole new OS to get to know. my machines run 7.1
or 7.5.5
he said this one is either running OS 8.5, 8.6 or OS 9. he couldnt
recall.

so I need coaching on how os 8 and os 9 are different from os 7. i dont
want to screw up this fine gift thru ignorance.

if you were hotrodding one of these up to the maximum number of
impressive things it can do, what would you trick it out with and what
would you use it to do???

questions welcome, answers embraced, shop talk invited avidly.

I bet he never knew this thing could become a G3...heh heh. oops. too
late now. it's mine, all mine.
I dream big. bowl me over. I already have megalomanic ideas for this
baby. what are yours?????
