Hi Janet, first, I'll offer these links to further your knowledge ; www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/stats/mac_performa_6360_160.html
Everymac has some basic specs, and more if you join ... http://www.zone6400.com/ Thomas Koons' 6400 zone has been up 6-7 years I believe. Much of the info pertains to a 6360, as it is very similar architecture to a 6400. In-depth site for like kind machines. > performa 6360 PPC gift. He gave me the apple 21" monitor, zip drive, extended keyboard. > > so- first Q is how to open the creature to see inside? > Sorry, can't help here, as I have 6400 and 6500 ... but the form factor (case) is a Quad 630, I believe . > the G3/L2 cache sounds dynamite. Ran a Sonnet G3/400 L2 card in a 6400 for a while. Like a new machine ... Would be similar in the 6360, as most of the specs are very similar. > what is this geoport modem, blah, blah > what makes geoports different from the earlier generation of serial > ports? This family of machines came w/internal modem cards in what's called the *Comm slot*. Specifically, Comm slot II. This was, I believe, a $$$ thing. Kept the computer price down, while giving basic access to the Net. The card did not have an onboard processor, so it used the machine's CPU to do the modem's work. When online this slows down the machine's overall performance. > said he had a 56k modem in it He may have had the original 28.8 changed out w/an internal Global Village 56K. Experience says take the comm slot II modem out, and use an external modem for best performance. > my B-i_L said it ' has a card in it". an ATI rage ... Maybe ... in *the* PCI slot, open it up ... Hopefully, yes, as otherwise, it uses 1MB of on-board Ram for video. Not enough to push that 21" monitor very far. > he thought it had 256 RAM in it. I think he had RAM and L2 > cache confused. I think he meant it has a 256k L2 cache. Max RAM is 136MB, 8MB on the logic board, 2 - 64MB modules in slots. Specs do say it may have come w/256K module in the L2 cache slot. Can take up to 1MB module there ... > he said this one is either running OS 8.5, 8.6 or OS 9. > so I need coaching on how os 8 and os 9 are different from os 7. When you boot up, the OS splash screen will tell you. Lots of differences, but it's still a Mac !!! Easy ... The machine will easily go to OS 9.1... 9.2 w/more work. > if you were hotrodding one of these, what would you trick it out with ??? 1-MAX the RAM ... 2-G3 card if you really want to ($$$) ... if no G3, then up the L2 cache to --512K or 1MB. 3-Forget the USB, yada, yada, it only has 1 PCI slot. Use it wisely !!! --A PCI Video card, 4-8MB, more than that on this machine is probably a --waste, even w/the 21" monitor. --Lots of older ATi OEM PCI cards around that will work easily. 4-A larger Hard Drive if you need the storage. 5-It will take a TV card also ... in the TV slot. 6-An Ethernet card for the Comm Slot II, so you can start networking all --those Macs together ... Join the LEM Swap List ... Good fortune ...
