When was the last time that you Optimized your hard drive? Fragmentation is a very common (and simply fixed) cause for type 1/2/3 errors.
Netscape is a good example of numerous programs infamous for fragmenting a HD due to the cache and mail folders using any available space for their folders. I keep my internet apps and cache on their own HD partition to make it easier to optimize. (Moving the Netscape Users folder from its default position in the System Folder/Preferences to the internet partition has cut down enormously on my OS drive fragmentation.) If you only have a single hard drive, start up from the tool disk CD (Norton, Techtool, etc.) and run the repair program before running the Optimizer program. Do a restart and you should see faster operation as well as elimination of the errors. (Other things can cause the errors such as a corrupted application, extension conflicts, etc., but the Optimizing is a good place to start.) If you have more than one HD, putting an OS and the repair programs on the second drive allows starting from that drive to fix the primary drive.
