A bad pram battery can produce such  effects  or a loose or bad scsi 
cable, did you add any drives ? A bad pram battery seems to be able 
to make almost any symptoms, bombing while extensions load etc.
change the battery & then remove all the RAM and scsi - attachments 
one by one ? If one disk or player is bad it happened that it halted 
the process, Zapp the Pram will reset the monitor settings - that can 
also produce a black screen - but maybe the startup would continue 
then ?
