Pee-RAM or Pea-RAM, take your choice.

Short for Parameter Random Access Memory.

However, it is more correctly called Nonvolatile RAM ... NV-RAM, as is stores 
more than parameters, it stores "persistent" values other than those which 
are parameters, strictly speaking, and it is nonvolatile, as it is backed up 
by a battery, the equally mis-named PRAM battery.

That battery also has functions other than backing up the PRAM ... it powers 
the keyboard power-on circuitry.
