OWC does not have 128 MB 72-pin SIMMs. The 128 MB memory you've
probably seen is 5-volt 168-pin, which will neither fit nor work in a
6100 series machine. They do have some 64 MB SIMMs for $18, each.

The most important challenges you'll face with your Performa are a very
slow processor, even slower built-in video, slow and tiny hard drive
and that dumb HD monitor connector scheme. It has a pretty glacial
CD-ROM drive, as well. A faster, larger hard drive will make a
noticeable difference, but you have a dilemma about the processor and
video. There is a single slot available for upgrades, so you can put in
one, but not both.

As for OS version, you will have to do a balancing act. There are lots
of improvement in 9.1, such as improved memory management,
multitasking, networking and disk operations, but it will use more of
the memory that will always be in short supply. The lowest I would go
is 8.1, which includes support for HFS+, a much more efficient file
system, and a significantly better version of OpenTransport.

Best advice: spend the least amount on this machine you can and try it
out. My experience with Office 98 and web browsers tells me you won't
its performance level up to your expectations. Short of a G3 upgrade,
it won't get much faster than it is, now, and for that price, you could
get a newer, better Mac.
