Today a spreadsheet I often use got corrupted. The whole thing became gray, and there were no columns anymore, or any data present. After reopening the file various ways, I gave up on Excel 98 and opened up the data with BBEdit. The data I most wanted (some bank information) did not appear to be present....
Now, corrupt files are nothing new. And I've been having some trouble with Excel lately (having to close and then reopen a file before I could see the data). But this file was crucial to me. It had all my passwords and codes! So my first thought was: Did somebody grab it off my computer from the Internet and then corrupt the file on purpose? I immediately changed a few passwords, most especially my online banking password.... I am using a hybrid PCI Mac (an 8500 in a 7200 box), and a modem connection to the Net. Does anyone think my paranoid fears may be true? Or completely unlikely? It's most likely that my Excel software is no longer stable. I like the way all the Microsoft Office products work together... but perhaps I should abandon my beloved Excel and go to Mariner Calc, which I tried out a few months ago and liked. Has anyone else experience with alternative spreadsheets? I think from now on I'm going to keep my code list on another computer, one not connect to the Internet, just to be sure.... t -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
