There's a clue right there...one you use often. Excel spreadsheets that 
are modified a lot are very susceptible to corruption. What you need to 
do is use 'Save As...' and save to a new file.

No. take off the tinfoil hat and relax...do not attribute to malice that 
which can be explained by Murphy and Microsoft alone ;-P

If you're not running promiscuous file sharing (allow Guest to do 
everything) there is nothing to fear. And even if you were, the odds of 
a skriptkiddie

Appleworks is ok, I really liked Claris Resolve...but unfortunately that 
was abandoned ages ago.
