Yep, Apple uses a powered microphone, specific to Macs. The microphone has a longer plug that contains an additional contact for power. A standard microphone will be detected, but does not have sufficient power to drive the audio. The speaker jack shares the same headsets or external speakers that are used with PCs.
Jabra makes the "Earset", which includes a single earpiece that doubles as mic and speaker. It uses the vibrations of talking transmitted through the bone around the ear to carry the audio to the earset. Very light weight and great quality audio in and out. It mixes the stereo to produce mono to the earset, so won't give sound direction control as used with some games. Those require stereo earphones, but for video conferencing, it is a great setup. The stock Apple microphone (Called the PlainTalk Microphone if memory serves.) is a good unit, but is fairly unidirectional, requiring it to be in a straight line and fairly close to the user's mouth. (I keep mine on top of the monitors, within 1 to 2 ft. of the keyboard and they pick up normal conversation quite well.) They also require a headset for audio reception.
