The 8500's microphone input jack is a line level input, about 1Volt signal level. The microphone in question is almost certainly a microphone level output, about 10mV (.01Volts). If you yell into the mic and listen carefully to the computer (with audio pass through enabled) you "might" hear something. To make this mic work you need to add a pre-amplifier to it.
