The Quadra 605 was a 68040 CPU, when Apple went to the 601 CPU and started the Power PC (PowerMacs), it meant a lot of changes. Software code had to be rewritten to work w/this new type processor, but still had to work on the older 68K based machines. Most Mac software from that era was written, simply put, in *Fat* form. It included what both 68K's and Power PC's needed to run. Problem ... this used precious space when installed *Fat*... well considering the 40 MB hard drive and 9MB RAM in my IIsi. Also, different *System Enablers* were required for some machines for versions of the OS to work. Hence, the different boot/install disks (especially floppies) for specific machines. Full Retail OS disks seem to have everything needed for any machine that can run that OS. I just made DiskTool floppies from OS 7.5.3 ... the *Read Me* pointedly says make one "DiskTools #1" for 680x0 machines and "DiskTools #2" for Power PC machines. > trying to resurrect a 7500/100 ... had no Hard Drive, RAM, or CD-ROM > when I found it Try these links for some specs and info on your 7500; http://lowendmac.com/ppc/7500.shtml http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/stats/powermac_7500_100.html Both sites say the 7500 will run w/OS 7.5.2 ( LowEndMac pointing to needing System Enabler 701 v 1.2 ), on thru 9.1 ... it will go further w/help > installed an Apple 600i CD-ROM, 512M of RAM, and Hard Disk from Quadra 605. > HD had Mac OS 7.5.5 > The 7500/100 booted up and ran ok. > decided to wipe the disk and reinitialize it in the Quadra, > put it into PowerMac, and load Mac OS 7.5 from a friend's CD. > I'm wondering where to start trouble shooting. Did your friend's OS 7.5.x CD come w/his machine or is it a Retail version ? There may be 2 *Disk Images* on the CD to make floppy boot disks. Look for DiskTools ... If you can find them, make a floppy for a 680x0 machine and a floppy for a PowerMac. If that works ... Are you sure the RAM now in the 7500 is good ? May be safer to start w/a smaller amount of RAM, 7.5.x doesn't require a lot. 16 or 32MB should work. The 7500 sold w/8 or 16MB new. The fewer variables the better. Reinstall the hard drive in the 7500 ... check All connections in the 7500, add monitor, Kybrd/mouse, power cable ... > Is there a jumper on the CD-ROM that needs to be set (other than the SCSI-ID) > in order to allow the machine to boot from the CD-ROM? No, but I would disconnect the CD drive, both power and SCSI. Eliminates SCSI conflicts ... as the HD was in the Quadra, and worked (?), it should be terminated. > tried taking out the PRAM battery and hitting the CUDA > button > after replacing the PRAM battery, machine gives chime sound at the first boot > attempt. > After boot fails, try to boot second time, get first instant of chime sound. > machine just sits there. > specific problem ? > > Any pointers would be appreciated, > Mike Did your Quadra keep correct time ? If yes, then it's PRAM battery is prolly good. Put that in the 7500, unless you have a known better ... Just remember the Quadra will lose its mandates (PRAM settings). Will restore; except it's conception. Do push that Cuda again ... hold 3-10 seconds. Load the Power PC DiskTools in 7500, Light the incense, a small prayer, boot ... To be continued ...
