The instructions that came with my Powerlogix card said to remove the old card, press the CUDA swith, then insert the new one. I believe they primarily suggested this order as it's hard to get to the CUDA buttom with the card in place. Depressing the CUDA will reset your system date and time.
Make sure the new card is seated well, and what about your RAM? You've got 768MB.... what is that comprised of? How many DIMMs and how many different types. If you have say 1 newer 128MB DIMM, try leaving just that one in place and see if it will work with it. It may not like some of the RAM especially if some is older. Also, you may try disconnecting any external SCSI bus peripherals from the machine and see if that makes a difference.
