James, You only need the software if you want to use a RAID. IDE/ATA drives do not use termination. Only SCSI. As far as the CD-RW, it sounds like either you don't have the right driver, or its ID isn't set right. With IDE/ATA, you can only have two devices attached. For example, on my Sonnet Tempo Trio, it has two ATA ports. On the one port, I have a ATA hard drive, and it is set to 'Master'. On the other port I have a Pioneer 105 and a CD-RW. I have the Pioneer set to 'Master' and the CD-RW set to 'Slave'. In your case, maybe you only have one port, and both the hard drive and the CD-RW are set to 'Master'. If you only have one ATA/IDE device on a port, it is supposed to be set to 'Master'. There is a thing called 'Cable Select', but I don't know when to use that.
STeve <<Dear Listmembers, This PCI card finally works, but I see it originally shipped with 'SofRaid' software, which I did not get and which seems to cost $159.95, if I have done my homework correctly. Often my 'homework answers are partially or not at all correct, so I am asking you. Since the card does see a 40MB IBM deskstar, do I need the software at all? Is termination critical with IDE devices? The speed increase in access to the HD is immediately and dramatically visible when I boot from that drive. This seems to demonstrate that the internal SCSI used by the 8600 is a potential bottleneck when using upgrade cards (i.e. the chain is as strong- or fast- as its weakest- or slowest link). Also, I have a Cendyne 24x10x40 CDRW drive on the card, but it does not show up on the desktop, or with SCSI Director, or with Toast 3.5.5. Cables are tight (power and 50-pin; audio out, etc. are not hooked up, since I could find no corresponding females in the bird's nest behind the bays). Information (particularly based on personal experience) would be appreciated greatly. Yours truly, James Reid Northern California >> -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
