John,
OS 9.1 is supported by Apple on that machine, though I don't know how fast
it would run. I use 8.6 on mine.

Max out the RAM to 128, add the video card and the TV Tuner/FM radio card,
and add an ethernet card, if you use ethernet. It probably makes sense to
also put in a USB card to connect peripherals. I have a 6500/250 that is
equipped exactly the same, except for the USB card. I haven't had a need for
one yet, since I have a networked laser printer.

If you are going to use a modem connection to the web and not broadband,
pull out the modem card if it is the 33.6k modem, and use a faster external
thru the modem port. The 6500 is a great little machine, though not as fast
as current hardware. Mine has served me well, but now that I have an iMac
and an iBook, it doesn't get any use at all.

I wish someone would make a reasonable offer for it. The darn thing was over
$2000 new. It's frustrating to see it go to waste.
Cheers,
John
