The popular software choices by 3rd grade teachers at my son's school
include: Appleworks 5, Math Munchers Deluxe, Storybook Weaver, Inspiration,
Talking Number Maze, and Kid Pix Studio Deluxe.

Almost all of our systems (5400/120/180/200, 5500/225) run OS7.6.1 (the
others are 8.1) and have 32mb or less of built-in ram.

The latest versions of some educational packages have much steeper
requirements (no surprise there), but keep in mind your audience. For
example, the latest version of Kid Pix (which we run in our PC lab - but
can't in the Mac Lab) has a much fancier look, but the kids often prefer
the older Mac version.
