I have been to this predicament a couple of times such that I now play safe by using Norton Utilities' Filesaver to update the drive's directory at least once a week (I keep it turned off). If you have saved the drive's directory info use NU's Unerase utility to see if will mount the drive (add custom disk or scan for missing drives).
