I haven't used VM for quite a while and while adding software drivers for a
USB cam, (testing it for a friend) the "Read Me" said that it needed VM on.
No problem, turned it on for 1 Meg additional memory. Restart and freeze on
start up with error message 11. Extensions off and all works again. Swapped
to a different drive also OS 9.1 with same results. Went to minimum
extension startup via Extensions Manager, restarted, same lock up. Replaced
System and Finder Files with fresh ones, same problem. Checked with Norton,
Apple and DiskWarrior programs found minor problems that were fixed. Same
results. Removed new drivers and tried again. Same results. Results:
Whatever I did worked with VM off and locked up with VM on!

Looks like an extension conflict or corrupted extension, but can't find
anything bad except for the lack of VM ability.

Any ideas?
Is there a real RAM limit after which VM won't work?
Doesn't act like a hardware problem since everything works fine with VM off.

Which part of the System controls the VM function? (System, Finder, etc.?

8600/G3, OS 9.1, 1 gig RAM, ATI 32 meg Rave, USB, SCSI 3 PCI cards, dual monitors, (second via built in 4 Meg VRAM) 4 SCSI busses worth of peripherals (2 built in, 2 via PCI card) OS is very fat with 3rd party extensions, but had the same problem with the minimum Apple extension set loaded.

First thing to check is your main HD. How much free space do you have and how much is contiguous. Since you have 1 Gig of RAM, you will need 1025 MB of HD available (1 Gig + 1 MB).

Also try using the software without VM turned on. Unless the USB cam is doing something very strange, it shouldn't really need VM turned on.
