I just added a 4 GB Barracuda HD to my 8600. I put it on SCSI bus 1 by itself. Everything else including the original HD are on SCSI bus 0. Now, after the computer is running for about five minutes, it locks up. System profiler shows everything with different ID#'s so there is no conflict there.
The IDs on Bus 0 have nothing to do with the IDs on Bus 1. IDs must be unique *on their bus* only.
I think the original HD is terminated, because it is set to ID 6.
IDs have nothing to do with termination. IDs are the mechanism by which the Mac OS addresses the device. (Yo, device #2, gimme that data!)
Termination is what stops the electrical signals from randomly bouncing back and forth within the bus. Hate it when electrons leak out...
The Barracuda is set to ID 0. If the two HD's are on different buses, do they both need to be terminated? What is the difference between bus termination and drive termination?
Both ends of each SCSI chain must be terminated.
The end on the controller (eg on the mother board) is terminated for you.
The other end of the bus is located at either the far end of the (ribbon) cable or in the SCSI interface on last drive's circuit board.
So to terminate that end of the bus, you must either attach a termination plug to the end of the ribbon cable *or* you must activate (enable) the termination mechanism in the SCSI interface on the last hard drive - typically done by adding a jumper.
One thing I was wondering about, one of the clips from a SCSI cable broke. I removed the clip from the cable. Could that have anything to do with it locking up?
If you mean the spring clips that make the plug grip the socket? That could cause the lock up if the plug isn't seated fully. Sometimes SCSI cables are so heavy, they can pull themselves out if not clipped or screwed in.
HTH, - Dan.
