A little more information on your system and OS may be helpful. When you are having problems it never hurts to zap the Pram (but you may need to reset a couple of things afterward), re-build the desktop, and run Disk First Aid. How far do you get on startup? Do any of the extensions load? What happens when you restart after locking up? What happens if you try starting up manually (instead of scheduling)? As far as the battery is concerned, I understand some Macs have problems booting with a bad battery. I work with a couple of 5400s and a Performa 575 with dead batteries. As long as they are connected to a funtioning outlet, you would never know about their battery. If you lose power, unplug them, or turn off their power switch then you lose settings such as date/time and AppleTalk. That's a minor annoyance on the 5400, but the 575 (which has some external SCSI devices) sometimes has to be restarted a couple of times to get back in sync with everything.
