I've been looking into an HD upgrade for some time now and still don't know what's best.
I do a lot of PhotoShop work [50MB>500MB files] and find that the 10 GB Seagate and 4.5 GB IBM scsi drives are constantly getting loaded up. Getting a bigger scsi HD seems quick and easy. Right? Maybe. Then I keep reading about the sizable speed gains to be had from using a controller card and cheap IDE drives. Reading up on that solution I find there are IDE controllers from various manufacturers in RAID and non-RAID flavors and speeds ranging from ATA 33 to133. Some of these cards have a 137 GB ceiling though. Then there's all the different brands of cheap IDE drives. Some having a 2MB buffer others with 8MB, 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM. WD and Maxtor seeming to be the best deals I've seen in the 80GB to 200GB range. At this point the more I read the more confused I become so I'm hoping for some clarity. This 7600 is soon to be G4'd with a Sonnet card, at 640MB the ram is abundant. I may want to run X one day but not now. I enjoy playing mpegs while I work and don't need the audio stutter problems I've read about with certain controllers. I know there must be a few of you out there who have discovered the perfect HD upgrade for the 7300, 7500, 7600 range of PCI PowerMacs. Price and relaibility are key. TIA for your ideas and advice in helping me make a suitable choice for my application. AL -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
