 And worse,
they respond to such loads not by slowing down, but by locking up...

I've had mine for almost a year and have five computers that it routes to. It has NEVER locked up on me.

That's great!

May I have some details? Exactly which make & model router? What
vers firmware? How fast in the downstream pipe into it? What is
your average load - ie, how much of the pipe is in use and how many
tcp & udp connections are running thru it?

We ran into trouble in the models we tested when we had each client
computer open more then two or three connections...

Router: Linksys EhterFast 4-port cable/DSL with 4-port switch; model
is BESFR41 ver2; Firmware is 1.40.2 Oct 23, 2001

The BEFSR41 is one of the units we tested. Same firmware. My notes show it topped out at just over 1.5 Mbps throughput. And it locked up repeatedly at around 1.2 Mbps from 4 clients.

By comparison, the ancient PowerMac 7100/66, running Mac OS 8.6 and IPNetRouter sustained about 6 Mbps (using the built-in 10 Mbps port and a 10 Mbps Asante NuBus card) before there were packet loss problems. With File Sharing and NetPresenz off, it sustained 8.5 Mbps.

hum. It should be noted that the lock-ups occured under a "hard use" simulation. It was not n people casually surfing. IOW, as long as the router is rated to be faster than your connection out to the 'net, you should do just fine under normal usage.

FWIW,
- Dan.
