Is anyone using IpNetRouter (by Sustainable Softworks)? If so, are you happy with it? Is there something better out there?
[ObDisclaimer: I like IPNR so much I've become a Sustworks reseller.]
I use IPNetRouter and IPNetMonitor and IPNetSentry. I'm very happy with them. Just starting to learn the ins and outs of IPNetSentry tho.
IMO, there are no better routing type products "out there" at this price performance level. The Sustworks products are versatile, reliable, FAST, and extremely well supported. IPNR's power is limited only by the speed of the Mac you put it on and the networking interfaces you provide. To do better, you'd have to look at boxes made by Cisco, with price tags that start at around $5K. To do worse (slower, less stable, fewer capabilities), check out the off-the-shelf "home" routers made by the likes of LinkSys and D-Link.
Here at my home/office, I use IPNetRouter on a PowerMac 7100/66. Cable modem, with dial-up modem as fallback. As a router, it spends most of its time idle, so I've added a few server softwares to it. The one box now does IP Routing, Firewall, NAT, DHCP, DNS, AppleTalk File Sharing, ftp, and http. Now and then, I also run Apple's LocalTalk Bridge, so I can connect older LocalTalk-based Macs to the 'net.
I've also installed IPNetRouter at a few of customer sites. Now and then, I even sell complete router/server solutions - depends on what parts I have, but usually they're rebuilt PM 7300's with all the software pre-installed.
...Well, that was the pci mac tie-in. But in general this is off topic for this mailing list. Followups should go private or to LEM's Mac Network list.
FWIW, - Dan.
