I always reply to Spam with the 'removal' option, until I get bored. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. All in all it seems to make little difference.
Bad bad idea! It lets them filter their lists for known good addresses.
What doing this generally means is that your spam volume will increase dramatically.
Mail.app has a seemingly good idea, in that you can bounce mail nack to the sender as undeliverable, but that doesn't work since the address it came from is always a hijacked or free mail account (like hotmail, yahoo, etc) that's dead by the time you respond.
In fact, about the only emails where this will work are the ones you sign up for, and generally want.
the best solution continues to be trainable bayesian mail filters, like Mail.app's Junk Mail filter, Bogofilter (a server-side application), and others like it.
(Not to re-ignite the perpetual flame of Netscape Bad/Netscape Good, but the latest release 7.1, and the Mozilla release 1.4 include functioning Junk Mail filters. As with all bayesian filtering system they need some training, but they work.
I'm using bogofilter since I have access to my mail server and can run procmail scripts, but the client-end stuff works.)
