---OK Here's an update: I ran disk first aid, zapped the pram, rebuilt the desktop. Let me add a few things I noticed about the printer. It's a CSW4100. I go to the chooser, choose my CSW, close window. Try to print and nothing. Not even a warning or message about something not installed. I have tried to reinstall the software from the CSW CD AND the CD extras from the OS 9.1 CD. Nothing. My next step is to look for a USB printer and a USB modem. Ebay's got plenty at very reasonable prices. That is unless you all can think of something extra.
