As a general rule, a machine-specific install disk will not install on 
another model.

For a universal (i.e., not model specific) install package, you need the 
so-called "retail" package.

An "upgrade" package will, however, install on any machine which the package 
claims it will support.

So, for, say, 9.2.x, which some third-party software products may require, 
you may have to have a "retail" version of OS 9, and then install the 
downloadable upgrades.

There *are* some universal installers for specific releases out there, but 
these are usually distributed only to Apple Service Providers.
