Even if you don't have Energy Saver installed on your current list of extensions, the settings from the last time it was installed remain. I think they are preserved in PRAM. You need to reload Energy Saver and change the settings. I guess clearing the PRAM would reset the savings to the default but I'm not sure what the default settings are. They may be the same as what you don't want. John

All
the Mac OS's I've had on this computer - OS 8.1,8.1 DTE
(Disk tools edition, pitiful, I know.), 7.5.5 - have
had this problem... sometimes, when the computer goes
into sleep mode, or if just the hard disk "sleeps," it
makes a wierd sound, then nothing when it "wakes up."

Mine would go to sleep, and not be able to "wake up" properly. That is, if
any Microsoft program was running, it would "wake up" frozen. I had to push
the front button for an emergency shut-off; not even a force restart would
work.

This happened under OS 8.6.

And funny thing is, I didn't even have Energy Saver installed!

After that the hard disk won't read, write, or
anything, and I can just run on ram until it locks up,
and I have to power off. The only OS that hasn't done
this for me is Yellow Dog Linux 3.0, so I think it may
yet have something to do with Mac OS.

I upgraded to OS 9.x, and it works fine. No problems of this sort afterwards...

Will getting 8.5/8.6 fix it? My dad
has a 7200/90 with 8.6 and has never had this problem.

Like I said, my problem was with 8.6.

It may have been hard-disk specific. I'm not certain of this, but my problem
seemed like a hard disk problem, on one particular machine (I have a
near-identical machine at work, with a different model hard drive, and it
never had that problem).

Upgrading to OS 9 solved it. No more problems.
