Doesn't all the energy saver control panel do set the settings. Woudn't the default settings to fine?
don't you think a HD being shut off and then restarted also would wear out eventually, like a lightbulb that you flicker on and off.

On one of my other mailing lists, one of the techs told the story of a 5.25" hard drive that had been running 24/7 for years, well over a decade.
It was shut off to be replaced by something newer and with more storage. A LOT more storage. The big problem he had with the new drive was mounting it in place. The 10 GB 3.5" drive was too small for the original drive mounting hardware.
When he tried to start up the old drive again, it wouldn't work. So he took it apart to get at the magnets (old 5.25" hard drives have astoundingly powerful magnets in them) and he discovered why the drive wouldn't work.
The bearings had ground themselves to pieces. I saw the pictures. Damn!
