Don't worry too much about wearing out the HD. In fact, you stress the thing more by turning the Mac on and off, than you do by leaving it spinning.

There are two optimal states for electronic equipment. ON or OFF


Not ON OFF ON OFF ON OFF ON
OFF.......................................   if this is done, expect
premature electrical and/or mechanical failure.

My computers stay on 24/7 unless it is absolutely necessary that they
be shut down (i.e. T&L storms).
