Hi

I've acquired a 7600/132 upgraded to a G3/300 (sonnet) and it has been working fine for a couple of weeks. Today when I started it I was very surprised.

It booted, showed the MacOS 9.1 logo, loaded the extensions and when the screen went blank before it should show the desktop it just stopped, showing the MacOS default background. It is just as the screen would be showing the second monitor, I can move mouse around the screen (but not off the screen), and there is no menu bar and no icons. I started without extensions, zapped pram but it didn't help. I know that the computer is working (not freezed) because if I push the power key I hear the sound alert (which plays when shutdown dialog is showing) and if I press S it shutdowns or if I press R it restarts. So why can't I see the desktop and dialogs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try rebuilding the desktop.

Restart & hold down shift option command.

That can often solve some oddball problems.
