Corrupted Mac OS, System Preferences? Restart with extensions off then goto

Preferences Folder to trash ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Preferences

(without emptying trash). If it starts normally and gets to the desktop

then you empty trash.

And while you are trashing preferences trash the Monitor and Sound folder as
well. It will recreate itself when you open the Monitor and Sound Control
panel.

If you are using a video card trash that extension and any associated
preference as well. Then reinstall it. And be sure you have the monitor plugged into
the card and not the onboard video.

Once I mistakenly plugged a monitor into the motherboard's video port instead
of my video card and had the same problem you are experiencing. --glen
