Corrupted Mac OS, System Preferences? Restart with extensions off then goto Preferences Folder to trash ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Preferences (without emptying trash). If it starts normally and gets to the desktop then you empty trash.

that would say starting from another disk and then trashing the desktopfiles with "trash desktop" or some other utility, and the preferences.
