I recently bought an 8500 (128 meg ram, i gig hd) but when one of the ram sticks didn't work (slot A1), I opened it up. Considering it was late, I wasn't able to properly seat the dimm, however, I noticed that there is no ROM in the ROM slot.
The ROM on the 8500 is soldered to the underside of the board. So you can hunt all day and not find them, unless you pull the motherboard out and turn it over. But, as another lister wrote, if the machine chimes at start up, then the ROM is present.
The four ROM chips on the 7500, 8500 and 9500 (and some 7200s and most clones) are 1.1" X .5" with 44 pins, 22 pins per long edge. The markings on them are 341S0168 through 341S0171.
