Sounds to me like someone tried to install OSX on it prior to your receiving it.
I've seen the exact same message when the OSX install fails.
Wipe the drive, zap the Pram & push the cuda ....

Open firmware is present on all macs regardless of what's installed. Its-----------
kind of like a BIOS found on pc machines, as it checks your ram and where to
boot the OS from and stuff like that. Usually you don't see it, but to put
BSD (or any other form of UNIX) on there you have to play around with it.
To get rid of it, just zap the PRAM and you'll never see it again.
Picked up a 6500/225 today. On boot, it displays a black and white screen
that reminds me of a DOS boot.
It says:
Open Firmware 2.0.3
Hmmm. I have a rather large accumulation of Macs (must be nearly 100,
from the 128 to G3 Powerbooks) and have never run into one with "access"
to the Open Firmware at boot. A prior owner must have been mucking about
with the thing. Is there some utility that causes the odd boot screen?
