Now, I have the thing and I've just started to want to use it. Problem is, there are problems. Especially one. I'm trying to use it to record about two and one-half hours straight (as a single file) but Sound Recorder automatically cuts out after about an hour.

Wow, that goes way back. FWIW - It seems to me (perhaps incorrectly) that the original Sound Recorder was limited by file size, not time. Perhaps changing the sampling rate will give you an acceptable quality sound while reducing the file size so you can capture the sound for a longer time. I'll dig around my archives and see if I can locate it to play around. It seems there was also a utility that would splice smaller files together as well but I can't remember its name right now.
