I run IE 5.1.6 on similar setup, without problems - except I use 9.0.4 So
perhaps you should upgrade to at least 5.1.6 (I had some sort of problem
with 5.1.7 and the difference was nothing much anyway).

First, 256 MB Ram is fine but you still need to watch what you are using
when opening a few programs. Do you get your trouble when operating only IE?
Give IE more memory in Get Info (I give mine 32768). IE uses caches on HD so
is your HD good, defragmented and have plenty of spare space. Is your RAM
memory good, test it with Gauge Pro. What settings in your browser
preferences? Do you set the cache preferences to have say 100MB? Look under
Advanced. Perhaps you need to reduce the number of pages it remembers too (I
have 50)

I'd not blame your OS and go to any higher one.

Best of luck

David Elmo
