FireWire timing is screwed up. SCSI Timing is even more screwed up. All of us playing with 10.3 with Ryan Rempel's XPostFacto 3.0a11 setup are tearing our hair out because while there is stuff Ryan has to fix, also the SCSI timing bug has caused massive trouble in LegacyWorld. The cynics among us might think that Apple did it on purpose but then they screwed up the FireWire also so they shot themselves in the foot.

I have seen a major speed boost on my G3/400 from using Panther. The thing was practically obsolete running 10.2 but it's a reasonable workstation now albeit a little stodgy at times - I blame the ATA33 bus myself!
Out of curiosity what is the driving force to have the latest OS on an older machine? Is it the new software that will only run on the latest OS, is it the older software that has a great new feature in the latest version, or is it that the OS is so great on its own that you will put up with bugs and sluggishness just to use it? If I missed a reason let me know (like new hardware that will only work with the new OS, cant afford a new machine, etc).
There is also the "I have a brand new Mac running the latest OS and I want all the machines to behave the same". I'm currently running mostly OS 10.2.x and 9.x on the machines I use and, well 9.2 just doesn't have the Dock in it but I keep trying to use it.
