The stupid '[PCI]' thing is making Mail.app sort all the replies

Threaded view, maybe, but I read multiple lists and organise them when my
inbox gets too big. I personally read stuff in date order. I would assume
this is actually the norm for most mail readers.

No. I have my inbox and our helpdesk folders in date order, but all my other mailboxes are in subject order, since I try to read through each of them daily.

For the record, the PCI tag is saving me an awful lot of time, because I can
see what is SPAM a lot more easily now. I place my vote to *keep* the tag.

That part is easy! All my SPAM in in my Junk folder!

Mail.app, Netscape/Mozilla/Thinderbird and now Eudora all offer quite effective spam filters.

I'm a big advocate of filtering. All my list mails get filtered to different folders *before* I read my e-mail, and they're each filtered based on the 'To:' header. I couldn't *possibly* keep up with all my e-mails otherwise. These folders (such as Powermacs, which currently gets my PCI powermacs and G-list mail) are always sorted by subject so I can go to things I'm interested in quickly.

What I don't understand is the problems people have defining filters to move mail to different folders upon reciept...I've set up such filters in Outlook, Eudora, Netscape (from 4.0 on to 7.2), Mozilla and Mail.app.

What mailers are people using that they cannot do this sort of filtering?
