For the record, I run BeOS on my Mac, and I can filter perfectly under BeOS,
mainly because each individual email is a seperate file with multiple
attributes attached to it (subject, sender, cc, etc) that I can query the
filesystem on. I write a query, save it as a file and open it to list my
filtered mail. Don't even need to make multiple mail boxes. Let's not go
there though ;-) (Apple should have bought Be...)
That's nothing special. Every e-mail carries a vast number of headers that it can be filtered by, to lesser or greater effect, depending on the quality and flexibility of the filter system in your favorite client. I personally have set up Mail.app in 10.3 to filter the list mail out by asking if 'Any Recipient' contains '<name of list>@maclaunch.com, with a filter and folder for each list. Works a charm. I must say however the tags at the front help me if I read it during the day on .Mac webmail, where it's all just dumped in my In tray, but that is by the by because I don't do that very often.
What I do know is the quality of the thread management in Mail.app for OS X 10.3 is atrocious.
