Old time lurker here, though an active participant on other lists.
I just bought a 5500 off eBay that I'll be (hopefully) picking up tomorrow. I have a couple of questions about it, though - the last time I used one was way back in '97!
I've heard/read it can do surround sound.... Exactly how does it do that if it's only got two (left/right) audio channels? Are there any specific apps that take advantage of this?
How is overall audio quality from the built-in speakers? Are they "tinny?" If it's anything like the Multiple Scan 15AV, then I'll be hooking up my own speakers, but if it sounds like the AudioVision 14, then great!
What's the deal with the accelerated video on the motherboard: is it an ATI chip? Rage II was what I think I remember. Does it have dedicated VRAM or does it share the system DRAM like so many other "Performas?" If it shares DRAM, just how fast is it? Is the built-in display limited to 1024x768? What's the max bit-depth at the highest resolution?
What is the CD-ROM interface? I think I remember most of these all-in-ones having SCSI CDs.
How about the IDE controller... I suppose it only works in PIO Mode 4, right? And it has a limit of 128 GB, I imagine.
What about the PCI slot. With the backplane and riser from a 6400/6500, can it accept two PCI cards or is it still limited to one?
I'd appreciate any other neat-o tidbits you guys can toss my way about things to appreciate with the 5500. I am going to deck it out with the TV/Video system (no FM, alas), and I'll probably set it up to dual boot BeOS...
Peace, Drew --
